Valentina Safronova (1918-1943) was a Soviet partisan scout in the area of Bryansk, Russia, during the Second World War. She crisscrossed enemy lines on reconnaissance, sabotage, and communications missions, receiving the Order of the Red Star along the way. She was wounded twice, the second time leading to her death in the custody of the Gestapo. In 1965, Safronova was posthumously declared a Hero of the Soviet Union, roughly equivalent to the Medal of Honor in the United States.
